A novel study has shown the Apple Watch to be the best heart rate monitor, yet not much of a calorie counting meter.

A study that was conducted recently shows the veracity of readings from common fitness trackers. The number of people purchasing and using biometric gadgets is proof of the fact that CV medicine has really taken off on a personalized level. Previously the errors and faults of these contraptions were a dark figure. Yet, after the study, we know with certainty how these devices clock in with regards to their capacity for measuring certain vital signs.

Consumer gadgets are not bound by the rules and regulations applicable to medical grade equipment though. The study compared among other gizmos the following: Apple Watch, Basis Peak, Fitbit Surge, Microsoft Band, MIO Alpha 2, PulseOn and Samsung Gear S2 with the FDA approved technology.

According to AppleInsider, many participants tried on the devices. The Apple Watch got the #1 position as far as heart rate monitoring was concerned. Its error rate was only 2%. This was followed by Basis Peak and Fitbit Surge. All the devices however measured low in accuracy as far as calorie counting was concerned.

The data generated by the devices was compared to a gold standard tracking methodology which included in its repertoire an ECG and calorimetry equipment.

According to MacRumors, no single device including the Apple Watch could provide accurate calorie counting facility. This was a field where an obvious lack was felt.

Yet even here, the Apple Watch performed better than the other gadgets. Estimating calories burnt through a range of activities is not an easy job.

The pace of the activity and the weight of the individual not to mention ten thousand other variables have to be factored into the final result. This is by no means a simple task. Yet the plus point of the Apple Watch remains and that is as a heart rate monitor.
