Top Gun 2 Finally Happening after 31 Years

The filming of long-awaited Top Gun sequel is expected to begin next year

After years of speculations, blockbuster movie “Top Gun” is finally getting its much-anticipated sequel.

Tom Cruise, the lead actor in the original movie, confirmed Tuesday during an interview that a sequel is “definitely happening” and that shooting would probably begin in the next year.

“It’s true. I’m going to start filming it, probably in the next year.” The 54-year old actor told Australian TV show Sunrise while he was promoting his latest action-adventure movie “The Mummy.”

“Top Gun” was the highest grossing film of 1986. The film earned more than $350 million worldwide and turned charismatic Cruise into a superstar. Tom Cruise played the role of a fearless pilot Maverick in the movie who feels guilty for fellow pilot’s death and never remains the same person he used to be. The movie received several Oscar nominations and went on to win the best original song category.

The original film was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson. In January 2016, Bruckheimer also met Tom Cruise in New Orleans to discuss the film.

Tony Scott was the director of the film who killed himself by jumping off a bridge in 2012. According to Variety, The “Oblivion” director Joseph kosinski is going to helm the upcoming Top Gun sequel. The movie also starred Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards, Meg Ryan and Val Kilmar. Val Kilmar who played “Iceman” in the original Top Gun is excited about the movie. The 57-year old who was engaged in a rivalry with Tom Cruise in the film is readying to reprise his role.

“Friends said it's official - #TOPGUN2 was announced today," Kilmer wrote in the caption of a photo showing him wearing a t-shirt with an image of Iceman character on it. "I'm ready Tom- still got my top gun plaque! Still got the moves! Still got it!"
