iPhone to Ditch Qualcomm in Favor of Intel and MediaTek

Apple is reportedly redesigning the iPhone to drop Qualcomm.

Qualcomm and Apple are locking heads in a legal battle that could hurt Qualcomm's sales. The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple is designing iPhones and iPads for 2018 that would not have Qualcomm chips, citing people familiar with the matter.

According to the report, Apple is considering to replace Qualcomm with Intel and possibly MediaTek. Apple had already used Intel modem chips in a mix with Qualcomm modems in the iPhone 7 and also in the iPhone 8.

Apple in general tries to have no dependency on a single component provider. That's not always possible. The iPhone X OLED screen is only supplied by Samsung, but Apple works with LG to change that.

The iPhone X will be released on Friday. The pre-order delay on the Apple store remain at 5 to 6 weeks. New pre-orders ship approx. mid-December.
