The times sure are changing. You can well imagine what the reactions of ordinary folks are when an ex-Google engineer plans on introducing a novel religion with artificial intelligence in place of the deity.

He hardly seems to be any priest or high commander of a faith. Anthony Levandowski wears casual clothes and engages in the usual high tech ventures such as autonomous vehicles and lawsuits worth hefty amounts of cash. Yet this man has more in him than meets the eye.

For one thing, he is the nascent founder of a futuristic religion whose basis is the worship of AI. Artificial intelligence has already made Silicon Valley a place where billions of dollars have been funneled in the name of progress. To make a religion out of it where robots represent the supernatural is something else altogether.

Termed “Way of the Future” this new church lies at the heart of a legal battle between Uber and Waymo. Levandowski is the head of the religion and he has already given the motto of the new religion as “the realization, acceptance and worship of a Godhead based on AI developed through computer hardware and software”.

Levandowski told Wired in an interview that among the salient goals is the design of a deity that is based on AI itself. The home base of this creed is the San Francisco Bay Area.

While Levandowski is dead serious about the lawsuit he is embroiled in right now, he is also focused on the religion that he has engendered. The man does not mean to offend the religious mindset and admits that it is not that AI is a God.

Yet he does say this much that AI has the potential to be a billion times more potent in matters of cultural capital than mankind. Whether this is a ploy to make a company into a church for reasons of his own remains a moot point.

He has decided that he will not earn a single dollar from his AI church. Also Levandowski wants to spread the word regarding AI and thus create greater awareness that will bear fruit in the future.

He has approved of the idea that computers have overtaken humanity as the wave of the future. It is a case of the product gaining oneupmanship over the producer. This fellow has been dealing in technology since his earliest days.

The incentive to make AI burgeon is what will take humanity into the miraculous event that is about to occur soon. This is nothing other than than what is termed as Singularity. Yet, Levandowski prefers the word “Transition”. It carries more positive connotations.

The Internet is the nerve center of this new religion. Super-intelligence is just a step away. While this setup will not solve all the problems of humanity, it will make them more easier to accomplish.

He knows that many will oppose his idea of a new religion with some going so far as to label it a blasphemy against established tradition. Yet Levandowski knows that if he plays his cards right, there is a chance his novel faith may catch on among the men and women of the times to come.

It is a costly venture too, but it is one which he has to undertake since his heart is in it. Besides, he wants to prove the world wrong regarding his ambition as a mover and shaker.
