  • Study Finds DNA of the Yeti Belongs to Bears

The DNA of the Yeti has been genetically analyzed and found to belong to a variety of Asian bears instead.

There have been quite a few Yeti enthusiasts who have believed in the presence of the mysterious Abominable Snowman somewhere in the Himalayas. Yet their cherished beliefs are about to be shattered.

A DNA analysis that took place recently showed that the bones that were supposed to belong to the Yeti actually belonged to a species of Asian bear. Earlier onwards there had been rumors of the Yeti being seen and there was also talk regarding its footprints in the snow.

The DNA evidence has given the verdict on this one. Nine samples of Yeti remains which included bones, teeth, skin, hair and excreta among them were analyzed genetically to determine which mysterious beast they belonged to.

These samples were collected from the Himalayas and Tibet. One sample was found to belong to a dog. The other eight were from bears which in turn belonged to three types.

These were the Asian black bear, the Himalayan brown bear and the Tibetan brown bear. This evidence has exploded the myth of the Abominable Snowman. It seems it was all just a whole lot of fuss about nothing at all.

The analyses in the past had left the matter an open question. Yet now the latest DNA testing showed the origins of the biological samples to be from ordinary animals rather than a humanoid creature. It was a very pinpointed research effort which yielded these results.

The latest equipment in terms of biotechnology was used to get to the heart of the matter. The truth was a letdown for many Yeti enthusiasts but such is the way of science. An ugly truth will always slay a beautiful hypothesis in the long run.

Science tries to clear the air of any and all mystique that may have been built up due to fuzzy thinking. It played a key role in getting to the bottom of the mystery.

There have been similar rumors of an African Unicorn in the heart of the Dark Continent. On further examination it turned out to be the Okapi which looks like a strange mixture of a zebra and a horse.

The fact that what were supposed to be remains of a Yeti turned out to be the relics from bears may go a long way in debunking such myths that are resistant to common sense. However, the evolution of bears is another topic which has been introduced into the mainstream of science thanks to this research effort.

The findings of this study got published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
