CES 2018 to Showcase First Smartphone with Fingerprint Sensor Under Display

Synaptics to introduce Smartphone Optical Fingerprint Scanner at CES 2018

Synaptics is a high tech firm that will bring something new to the CES 2018 platform. The company declared the completion of an optical fingerprint scanner towards the end of 2016. A novel type of this device was unveiled recently and it scans the fingerprint while it is underneath the OLED.

The first smartphone with this sort of high technology will debut at the CES 2018. Synaptics is ready to manufacture and mass-produce its Clear ID FS900 optical in-display fingerprint sensor.

This sensor is meant for smartphones with button-free, bezel-free infinity displays which resemble the iPhone X and the Samsung Galaxy S8. Synaptics has claimed that its new technology is magically activated in the display screen of the smartphone.

This solution is said to possess double the quickness of 3D facial recognition. Even if your fingertip happens to have water on it or is extra dry in winter or supercold, the sensor will respond to it being placed on its surface.

This sensor is scratch-resistant and waterproof. Whereas facial recognition faces various issues since the angle may not be right, fingerprint scanning is a simple-enough affair.

Synaptics did not divulge which smartphone maker it is working in tandem with except for the fact that it is a top five OEM. Therefore the company’s partner in progress remains an enigma to many except for maybe some insiders.

While many people would go jumping to conclusions by naming Apple as that mystery partner, others would hedge their bets on an Android maker such as Samsung, Oppo, Vivo or Huawei for that matter. The thing is that Apple has its own in-house facilities for sensor manufacturing.

Yet whether Apple would continue to use facial recognition as its yardstick or turn to fingerprint ID remains an unclear thing. Synaptics’ choice of partner will become clear at the CES 2018 which is bound to take place in Las Vegas, Nevada soon.

Synaptics will give a live demonstration of in-display fingerprint sensor on a full-production, upcoming Tier 1 customer phone during CES 2018. CES 2018 will run through January 9-12 in Las Vegas Convention Center.
