Fake NES Classic Are Huge Problem for 2018 NES Classic Relaunch

Identical looking NES Classic knock-offs fool consumers.

Nintendo will bring back the NES Classic in the Summer of 2018, but there is a big looming problem. There are incredibly authentic looking fake NES Classic on the market. It's almost impossible to tell the difference between a fake NES Classic and an authentic Nintendo-made NES Classic. The fake NES Classic are available direct from China at around the same price as the original.

The availability of the authentic looking fakes is tempting resellers to sell them as the real deal for the current going price of an NES Classic, which is between $180 around $220.

The NES Classic knock-offs are not just having the same packaging, console design, controller design, short cable, but also the same user interface. There are only small tells that consumers can try to find in order to identify a fake. The packaging has some slight differences in logos and misses some TM symbols. Fakes also use mostly the European package design. There is also a serial number on the box that has been spotted on all fakes have so far: CU202495144.

Whoever makes those identical NES Classic units will likely improve clones for the relaunch of the NES Classic. Nintendo needs to step up and introduce some kind change on the 2018 NES Classic release that enables consumers to easily identify if they are buying an original or a fake. Otherwise, the launch will be a big mess, similar to the problems WowWee has with fake Fingerlings this Holiday season.

N64Guy has a detailed review of the identical fake NES Classic. You can watch the video review below. It does work like the original. There are obvious differences in build and software quality. The fake NES Classic are readily available at wholesale prices at DHGate.

There have been always NES clones and much more so since the renewed hype. You can buy a NES Classic clone for $19.99 directly from China with 620 games pre-installed. Here it's though obvious that it's a fake unit and not an authentic Nintendo product.

Nintendo made the announcement to make the mini Nintendo Entertainment System available again in September. The Japanese video game maker released the NES Classic on Nov. 11 in 2016. The retro console quickly sold out and became an incredibly hard to find item.

The demand and hype around the NES Classic were much bigger than for the SNES Classic. Nintendo made so much more Super NES Classic units available that basically all consumers who wanted one got a SNES Classic by now. Nintendo sold 2.3 million NES Classic until it pulled the plug on the extremely popular retro console. On April 13, Nintendo announced to stop production of the NES Classic Edition. Nintendo said that the last shipments of the NES Classic arrive through April. We kept spotting through the NES Classic Edition in May.

The palm-sized NES console, retailing for $59.99 list price, features the classic Nintendo NES controller many geeks have grown up with. The retro console comes pre-installed with 30 classic NES games including Super Mario Bros., Pac-Man, Metroid, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda and Kirby's Adventures. The NES Classic Edition system is a miniaturized version of the groundbreaking NES, originally released in 1985.
