NES Classic 2018: Changes, Price and Release Date

The NES Classic will come back this year, but will it be the same?

Not everything was great with the NES Classic released in 2016. Besides the notorious shortage, the NES Classic had some annoyances. For starters, the controller cable was way too short. An even bigger problem was that Nintendo did not bundle a second controller with the NES Classic like it did with the SNES Classic.

The original stand-alone NES Controller was even less available than the retro console itself. Nintendo introduced some convenient features in the SNES Classic that make gameplay more enjoyable like the rewind feature. Nintendo could solve all the issues above with the release of an updated NES Classic. The company could also solve with an update another huge problem.

A new NES Classic with two controllers and other improvements would make it easy for consumers to identify fake NES Classic units that are flooding in from China and are sold as original NES Classic. We covered the problem identical looking fake NES Classic earlier.

Nintendo announced to re-release the NES Classic in September of last year. The statement said: "Next summer, Nintendo will also bring back the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition system with new shipments. More information about the timing of the return of NES Classic Edition will be announced in the future."

One aspect of the announcement supporting the possibility of an updated NES Classic unit is the release time frame. Why would Nintendo need until summer of 2018 to ship more NES Classic units? They could have just restarted production last Fall and begin shipping the NES Classic in time for the Holidays in parallel to the SNES Classic. Summer is a very vague release time frame. Nintendo will though likely start shipping the NES Classic in early summer, as early as May.

The 2016 NES Classic sold for $59.99. In case Nintendo adds a second controller, the 2018 NES Classic will be more expensive. The new price could be $69.99, which is still $10 cheaper than the SNES Classic.
