CES 2018: Vivo Shows First Smartphone with In-Display Fingerprint Scanner
  • Vivo Becomes the First Company to Bring In-Display Fingerprint Scanner to Smartphone

Vivo becomes the first ever company to incorporate an in-display scanner in their phones at the CES 2018

Vivo announced in 2017 that they will be introducing an in-display scanner in their phones. At CES 2018, they seemed to have achieved their goal. The company hosted all attendees who were welcomed to test the new technology.

The in-display fingerprint scanner has eliminated the need for a home button on the main screen. The smartphone indicates where the user can put their finger and scans it on the screen to unlock the phone. Hence the only need for the home button becomes obsolete.

Senior Vice President of Vivo, Alex Feng said in a statement about the new in-display scanner that; “Today’s showcase of a ready-to-produce in-display fingerprint scanning smartphone featuring an optical fingerprint sensor is a big leap forward in bringing consumers this long-awaited, futuristic mobile experience. We are very excited to make it available to consumers soon.”

Synaptics is basically the company that is designing the fingerprint scanner that is functional in the smartphone. The company will be going into mass production after the initial successful reception of the scanner.

The company is initially engaged with Vivo to mass produce these scanners. However, it is reported that more phone companies will also be ordering similar in-built fingerprint scanners from Synaptics as well.

CES 2018 attendees who tried out the fingerprint scanner were amazed. They were happy that they don’t have to fumble to find out the fingerprint scanner on the back of the phone. Or keep putting their thumb on the side of the phone to find the scanner.

Some experts who were trying out the technology that the scanner was slower than present fingerprint scanner available in the market phones. We can all agree that the scanner introduced at the convention is the first prototype and Synaptics and Vivo will bring an improved version in the final product.
