Samsung's Future Galaxy Display has Holes instead of Notch

Samsung patents new display with holes for sensors.

The notch on the iPhone X display is a compromise. Samsung has an alternative in the works. A new patent shows a smartphone screen that has holes for the essential front sensors.

This way the screen has an almost 100% screen to body ratio and it looks much cleaner as the edges are not disrupted. If an OLED screen can have a notch, it should be possible to cut holes in it as well. The schematics in the patent spotted in the WIPO database also shows a cut out for the fingerprint scanner.

Chinese Vivo has demonstrated at the CES 2018, that you can place a fingerprint scanner under the display. A cut out is not needed for this optical fingerprint scanner.

At this point, we do not know when and if Samsung will use this new patented display in smartphones. It's though very likely that notches on smartphones will soon be a thing of the past.

The full patent, spotted by LetsGoDigital, can be seen here.
