Why the Wacky Happy Salmon Game Makes People Happy

Happy Salmon is a Toy of the Year 2018 finalist.

Happy Salmon is a simple, fast-paced card game that makes people happy, according to the makers behind the wacky game. The game consists of a bunch of action cards including the classic "High 5", the unifying "Pound It", the frantic "Switcheroo", and the delightful “Happy Salmon”.

Players call out the action shown on their top card at the same time. When two players have a match, they celebrate by performing that action together, then discard their top card. The first player to discard all their cards wins. This sounds not too exciting, but the result is astonishing. Just watch the two videos below showing people play Happy Salmon. You would think they are insane if you don't know that they play Happy Salmon.

North Star Games is the publisher of Happy Salmon. The game was invented by Ken Gruhl and Quentin Weir. North Star Games' Nick Bentley, a former Neurobiologist explains why people who played Happy Salmon love it. It's about touch. "Happy Salmon creates a level of touch close enough to release a flood of happy chemicals, but not so close it’s awkward. The players can feel it, and it makes them feel good, and that makes the touching even more enthusiastic and effective, in a viciously happy circle."

He continues: "The neurobiology of touch is, I’m certain, the core gameplay reason Happy Salmon is a hit. I’m extremely proud we publish it, because there are a lot of stressed-out people in the world who don’t trust each other. The miracle of Happy Salmon is that it’s a real antidote, disguised as a ridiculous little card game."

Happy Salmon is on sale on amazon.com for $12.94. The Happy Salmon Blue version, on sale for $13.95, is the same game but with different color cards. You can use it by itself or use in conjunction with Happy Salmon Green to expand your game to 12 players.

Happy Salmon is a Toy of the Year 2018 finalist. Winners of the TOTY 2018 Awards will be announced on Feb. 16, on the night before the Toy Fair 2018 New York opens its doors.
