KGI re-estimates iPhone X shipments in the first quarter with a lower number than before

A few months into shipments and it was pretty clear that Apple’s iPhone X is not Apple’s one of the best-selling smartphones in recent years. A number of analysts who predicted iPhone X’s sales have been forced to reconsider their number. Ming-Chi Kuo from KGI Securities estimated a total of 20-30 million units of iPhone X being sold in the first quarter of its release, but the new estimate is just 18 million units.

The company also provided a number of reasons for this unexpected performance of Apple iPhone X sales. Analysts from the company accounted the Chinese market to help largely in achieving this figure. What they didn’t think of was that Chinese phone users have a longer smartphone refresh cycle than a lot of other markets in the world.

Another reason why iPhone X might have underperformed is that of the belief that due to the notch on the top, the total usable area in iPhone X is not really 5.5 inches. The earlier-mentioned reason has also persuaded the analysts to re-estimate the sales of Huawei and Oppo’s smartphones. For the second quarter, Ming-Chi Kuo believes that Apple will sell an estimate of 13 million iPhone X units as iPhone 7 and iPhone 6S are still going strong in sales.

KGI has concluded that Apple might see a 0-5% growth in iPhone X sales by the end of the first half of 2018 compared with the first quarter of the launch. Adding to all that, Kuo has also reconsidered Apple’s moves for 2018 and estimated that the tech giant will be releasing 3 new iPhone this year. One would a 6.1-inch LCD model, the other a 6.5-inch OLED model, and a successor to the iPhone X.

Should this prediction turn out to be true, Kup also concluded that Apple may even stop the production of any more iPhone X units by the mid of 2018. According to the report, if this prediction is true and the numbers turn out to be as they are being predicted right now, then an estimate of 62 million iPhone X units would have been sold by Apple in the iPhone X’s life cycle.
