Your Alexa Will Not Drive You Crazy During Super Bowl 2018

Amazon will run 2 minutes of Alexa commercials during the Big Game.

Amazon is advertising at the Super Bowl 2018 in a big way. The 90 second Alexa Super Bowl 2018 ad with Jeff Bezos will be followed by a 2nd 30-second Alexa Super Bowl 2018 commercial. Additionally, the company runs a Super Bowl commercial for Amazon Prime.

To avoid that your Alexa goes off during the Amazon Super Bowl 2018 ad, the company has tweaked the audio on the Alexa Super Bowl commercials. The Alexa ads transmit softened sound in an upper portion of the audio spectrum, between 3,000 and 6,000 hertz. Amazon has patented that method and a Redditor has confirmed this according to Bloomberg a year ago.

Amazon has posted about how to teach Alexa not to respond in this blog post. "The trick is to suppress the unintentional waking of a device while not incorrectly rejecting the millions of people engaging with Alexa every day," said Shiv Vitaladevuni, a senior manager on the Alexa Machine Learning team in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Amazon calls the technique acoustic fingerprinting technology.

Just in time for Super Bowl Sunday, Amazon puts up Amazon Devices on sale. You can pick up the Echo for $84.99, the Echo Dot is $39.99 and the Echo Show is $149.99 on today.

A 30-second spot sells for more than $5 million, but that didn't stop several Super Bowl advertisers to buy time for long-form commercials to tell their story. Storytelling replaces dogs and weird ads.
