American astronauts teamed up with Russian cosmonauts and a Japanese astronaut to ensure first ever sporting event in zero gravity

Astronauts aboard International Space Station played badminton for the first time in zero gravity conditions of space, Russian space agency Roscosmos reported on Tuesday.

It was, in fact, the first-ever sporting event held on ISS and looks like a lot of fun.

"For the first time, the ISS became a venue for sports. Athletes from Russia, the US and Japan competed in the orbital badminton tournament.” Space agency representative said in a statement.

In the first game, Russian cosmonauts took on Mark Vande Hei from the United States and Norishige Kanai from Japan. Vande Hei was replaced by his fellow countryman Joseph Acaba in the second game.

Although both games were packed with high-flying action and astronauts can be seen hitting shuttlecock back and forth with their rackets, there was no definite winner of the historical game. The game was reportedly played under "space rules" but unfortunately score did not kept. So, they declared that “friendship won” in the end.

“The score wasn’t kept in the first match, so all athletes can be named the winners of the first historic match.” the National Badminton Federation of Russia (NBFR) said.

Living in space is not just all work. ISS astronauts often find ways to have fun in space. They take a break from their busy schedules while orbiting the earth and try to relax, exercise and enjoy. One of the participants Mark Vande Hei has suggested that it might be a right time to add an ISS module specifically for playing games.

"In the future, in ships that will carry us to other worlds, it is necessary to provide a separate module for such a game,” said Vande. “Since it is very useful from the point of view of psychological relaxation and strengthening of friendly relations in a team.”
