Easy Fix for macOS Update Error: The path /System/Installation/Packages/OSInstall.mpkg appears to be missing or damaged

In case your macOS High Sierra update fails, here is an easy way to try again.

I just encountered a problem while installing the latest macOS update 13.3.3. My iMac runs macOS High Sierra 13.3.2. During the reboot and install process the installer window comes up with the error message: "The path /System/Installation/Packages/OSInstall.mpkg appears to be missing or damaged."

If you hit the restart button the same happens again and you are stuck again. You can boot in safe mode with holding shift down, but booting normally ends in the failed update screen. The easy way out is to click on the installer window (put it in focus) to make the main menu appear. Then click Startup Disk from the menu and select the disk your MacOS system is installed. After reboot, you are back and running your macOS 13.3.2 version.

Now you can go back into the app store and scan for new updates or download the macOS 13.3.3 update directly to try the update process again. The macOS High Sierra 10.13.3 combo update download is available on the Apple support site.

As always, make sure to run a backup before letting macOS install an update. There is always a chance an update fails or breaks your macOS installation.
