With the unofficial release of Fitbit’s new vision, perhaps you’re feeling that it’s time to upgrade your own smart watch.

If you’re the owner of a classic Fitbit, then you know that the device is designed for function, not fashion. It may be adept at counting your steps, carefully calculating how many calories you’ve burned and detecting your heart rate, but one thing the Fitbit can’t do is blend in with a trendy ensemble. But photos recently leaked of Fitbit’s new smart watch, and it looks like the company may be turning a corner in terms of the aesthetics of its wrist-bound devices.

“Mass Appeal”

When Fitbit unveiled the Fitbit Ionic last November, hopes were high that this new smart watch would be able to combine the functionality of the company’s previous devices with the chic lines and shades of Apple smart watches. Those hopes were quickly dashed. While the Fitbit Ionic worked well enough, its clunky design made it an eyesore. It seems that Fitbit’s team understood the product was lacking—higher-ups were quick to drop clues about a forthcoming model with “mass appeal.”

Now with the unofficial debut of the new Fitbit smart watch, that widely appealing product has stepped into the limelight. The new Fitbit device harkens back to the Pebble Time Steel with the square face and thick wristband, which apparently comes in an array of materials. Buts its lines are slightly smoother and its watch-face designed to reflect current technology and trends. It’s also smaller than the Ionic, so those with petite wrists will enjoy wearing it, too.

Fresh Features

Even with this move toward “mass appeal,” Fitbit is about function first and foremost. So you can expect a few new features from this smart watch. It will still enlist the same Fitbit OS that the Ionic debuted last year, but with added bonuses, like an oxygen sensor that can detect if the wearer is experiencing a bout of sleep apnea. The smart watch can even withstand water submersion, made to endure dives of up to 50 meters down into the waves, according to reports. Needless to say, the fresh Fitbit comes fully loaded.

Equally Attractive Alternatives

However, when you’re looking for a smart watch, Fitbit and Apple aren’t your only options. If you really want something chic that can go from the office to a cocktail party, opt for an upscale watch like the Movado Bold by Little Switzerland. It boasts most of the same capabilities of your standard smart watch—email and text message alerts, haptic phone calls, social media pings—but its stunning black stainless steel and round clock face make it look like a classic timepiece.

With the unofficial release of Fitbit’s new vision, perhaps you’re feeling that it’s time to upgrade your own smart watch. You can wait until Fitbit officially unveils the fresh device, or opt for a sturdy piece of elegant machinery that’s already on the market—like the Movado. Either way, make sure that the device boasts the features you need in order to stay fit, happy and healthy.
