GDC 2018: Atari Shows Ataribox Prototype and first Atari Switch Game

Atari has big plans for Game Developer Conference 2018.

Atari will exhibit for the first time the Ataribox. Fans can go close up with an Ataribox prototype at the GDC 2018. The GDC 2018 takes place in San Francisco later this month. The company canceled a crowdfunding campaign for the Ataribox last minute end of 2017.

Inspired by the iconic silhouette and style of the legendary Atari 2600 Video Computer System, the Ataribox got a lot of attention. While Atari announced to show the prototype of the console and of peripherals, there are no further details on when and how Atari will bring the Ataribox to the market.

The Ataribox runs on a custom AMD CPU and will be open. You will be able to play retro Atari games as well as PC games. The communicated price-range is between $250 and $300. Initially, the release was planned for Spring 2018. As Atari is still in the prototype stage, a release is at the earliest in the Holiday season 2018.

Atari will also debut their first game developed for the Nintendo Switch at the GDC 2018. The game is called RollerCoaster Tycoon. RollerCoaster Tycoon Joyride for the PS4 is Atari’s first Virtual Reality Title.

The GDC attracts over 26,000 attendees each year, making it the world's largest professional game industry event. This year the video game conference runs from March 19 to March 23.
