A new plan would keep 200 ToysRUs stores open under Canadian ownership.

A new report makes hope that some ToysRUs stores will remain open in the United States. CNBC reports that ToysRUs is looking at a plan to keep 200 of the 800 ToysRUs stores open in the United States. This would be possible under a deal that combines the US TRU stores with the better positioned Canadian ToysRUs stores.

Update March 15: ToysRUs files documents to wind-down US operations. The toy retailer is closing all US stores.

The ToysRUs brand could survive under this new plan. CNBC cites as source people familiar with the matter. An announcement about the liquidation plans is expected for today or tomorrow. A court hearing planned for Monday has been postponed to Thursday, March 15. The court date has been moved several times already, indicating that there is a lot of activity behind the scenes.

One of the ways ToysRUs could stay relevant is to create toy shopping destination. Think of it like Disneyland meets toy store. ToysRUs could create mega toy stores similar to the Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid in Memphis. Online shopping for toys is convenient and can save money. Physical toy stores have to offer something an online store can't to survive.

ToysRUs filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September of last year. The beloved toy retailer has already closed every 5th store. Now there is a chance that ToysRUs stores will be history. ToysRUs was founded in 1948 as a baby furniture store.
