Review: Axum Gear Wireless Earbuds with Incredible Deep Bass and Smart Design
Axum Gear Wireless Earbuds

New Axum Gear Bluetooth Earbuds take on Apple's PowerBeats3.

The Axum Gear Earbuds provide surprising sound quality despite their small size and low weight. Once I got the fit of the Axum Gear right, the deep bass is incredible. With bass intense tracks like You want it Darker, Paul Kalkbrenner Remix) my head starts to feel like a vibrating speaker.

The Axum Gear earbuds are designed for workout use and are sweatproof. The smart design of the hook makes sure the tiny wireless earbuds never fall out. I can confirm the company's claim that the Axum never fall out. They are extremely secure in my ears. Because of their low weight, I don't have any pressure on my ears while wearing.

The Axum Gear earbuds started out as an Indigogo crowdfunding project in 2016. After raising over $150,000 and two years of development the Axum Gear earbuds are shipping now for $189 (reg. $299) worldwide from the Axum Gear online shop.

The loud and full sound comes from a custom 8mm dynamic driver. I love deep bass. This is why I use Beats Powerbeats3 for 2 years during my workouts. While the sound is great, the cable between the two earpieces continues to annoy me. The Axum Gear earbuds don't have a cable, making them much more comfortable to wear.

The Axum Gear earbuds actually go deeper with the bass than the PowerBeats3 in my tests. The key to the full bass experience is the fit. I did not hear any bass when I put the Axum on the first time. Only after trying out different ear tips (6 pairs are included) and adjusted the angle of the earbuds in the ear the bass suddenly appeared and was awesome.

Axum Gear Correct Fit

The right fit is extremely important with the Axum earbuds to experience their full capabilities. Besides the ear tips (3 pairs silicon and 3 pairs foam), you can change the hooks. I tried all combinations and for me, the perfect fit is with the medium-sized foam ear tips and the medium-sized hooks. Your ear is likely different. I recommend taking the time to find the perfect fit to get the most out of the Axum Gear earbuds.

Make sure that the hook keeps aligned properly, else the earbuds won't fit in the charging molds in the charging case. The charging case has a built-in battery giving you 6 full recharges on the go. The Axum Gear provides up to 3 hours of play-time on a single charge. It takes about 1 hour to fully charge these Bluetooth earbuds.

The PowerBeats3 provide much more playtime with up to 12 hours. Their larger size is here an advantage over small earbuds.

Axum Gear Versus Powerbeats

The Axum Gear earbuds have a built-in microphone, enabling phone calls. Pressing the button on the left earbud takes an incoming call. The buttons on the earbuds can also be used to control the music playback. A double click is playing the next song and a single click means to stop or play. During an incoming call, a double-click means reject the call.

To switch on the Axum Gear, hold the button on each earbud for 2 seconds. A voice will come on from each earbud saying "power on" followed by a "TWS is connected" once the earbuds connect to my iPhone. When you pair the Axum Gear the first time with your smartphone you need to press the left earbud button for 4 seconds. Then you can find the earbuds in the Bluetooth settings on the smartphone and connect them. The device name is "AXUM GEAR_L."

Axum Gear Verdict

The Axum Gear earbuds provide incredibly deep bass, something that I did not expect to be possible with such small earbuds. They are very comfortable to wear and stay in place all the time. I can shake my head as hard as I want, jump or run, there is just no movement of the earbuds at all.

Compared to the Powerbeats3, the downside of the Axum Gear is the battery life. The Beats offer 4x battery life, but are bulkier and have the annoying neck cable.

Cool new technology has its price. The Axum Gear Earbuds are about $50 more expensive at the moment compared to the Beats PowerBeats3. The Axum Gear earbuds sell for $189 (reg. $299) worldwide from the Axum Gear online shop.
