KB Toys Is Coming Back as ToysRUs is Leaving

A long-closed toy store is going to open again in 2018.

KB Toys gets resurrected from the dead. KB Toys was a chain of mall-based retail toy stores founded in 1922 and went out of business almost 10 years ago. At its height, there a have been about 1,300 stores across all 50 states. This was more stores than ToysRUs. Strategic Marks, LLC has acquired what was left of KB-Toys about a year ago.

Ellia Kassoff, founder of Strategic Marks announced that they are working for months on plans to bring back the Great American Toy Store. With ToysRUs closing down, they accelerated their plans and hope to open KB Toys stores in time for Christmas.

Kassoff said: "With the demise of Toys R Us, this week, we have now accelerated our business plan and hope to have our stores up and running before Christmas. We're in discussions with many of the toy manufactures, as we try to find out the best way to support them and the 20% loss of the US toy market due to the Toys R Us liquidation."

The response to the announcement of the KB Toys comeback has been met with great excitement from the toy industry. "Wow! is all we can say after our first announcement here on Linked In that we're bringing back @kbtoysstore very soon. We've received so many calls, emails, and private messages of support as we try to #savethetoyindustry. Due to the overwhelming response, we can't commit to replying back immediately but we will get to all messages as fast as we can," Ellia Kassoff said in a follow-up post on LinkedIn on Sunday.

Strategic Marks, LLC has already brought back some old department store brands. The company was in a legal clinch with Macy's over the use of such nostalgic brands like Robinson-May, Bamberger's, I. Magnin, Bullock's, Foley's and Jordan Marsh.

In 2016 Macy's and Strategic Marks, LLC settled and these brands are now featured on an online retail platform called Retro Departments Stores. There is not that much substance there for each of these brands. KB Toys might be the "gold" Strategic Marks was seeking in retro store brands.

The KB Toys come back means also hope for some of the 33,000 ToysRUs employees to find a new job. ToysRUs is in the process of preparing to close the remaining 735 ToysRUs stores. The new ToysRUS closing sales have not yet begun.
