Apple Develops MicroLED Displays for Apple Watch

LG and Samsung might have a new problem.

Apple is reportedly working on its own display technology. The display for the iPhone and Apple Watch is an expensive component. If Apple can make displays themselves would give them the opportunity to cut out suppliers and create a unique technological advantage. The stocks of major display makers already dropped on the rumor.

Apple already designs its own chips. Displays could be next if the sources of Bloomberg's Mark Gurman are correct. According to the report, Apple develops MicroLED display technology at a secret plant in Santa Clara.

MicroLED is seen to be able to compete with OLED, delivering brighter displays at lower power consumption. The MicroLED technology is difficult and Apple was according to Gurman close to scraping the effort. Apple's engineers have now supposedly overcome the issues and produce screens for testing.

The Apple Watch could be the first device that will have a MicroLED display designed by Apple. An Apple Watch with a MicroLED display is still years out. There is likely again a new Apple Watch coming in 2018. A new overall design could be in the cards.
