Every 500 M Driven leads to the Melting of Approximately 15 Kg of Glacier Ice in the next Century

It is a fact that has been ratified by now that it just might be too late for mankind to stop some of the devastating effects of global warming. The rate at which glacier ice is being lost is phenomenal.

The Himalayas and Rockies are going to be facing some mighty upheavals. In the next century or so, nothing whatsoever could be done to stop the glaciers from melting and releasing all that water into the world’s oceans and land masses.

Even if all the carbon dioxide pollution in the world were to mysteriously disappear today, it would not make an iota of difference as regards this frightening scenario.

These glaciers normally change at a slow rate. Yet the impact of our activities as human beings tends to even influence them to a considerable extent.

What happens beyond the 21st century is anyone’s lucky guess. The scientists have predicted that for each distance of 500 meters covered by a car there will be a corresponding meltdown of one kg of glacier ice sometime later on in the future.

Researchers calculated these rates after a great deal of brainstorming and analysis. The roadmap over the next one hundred years does not look good at all.

The question on everyone’s lips is how we can reverse or at least stem the tide of events which are clearly leading to disaster. The equation involved in this whole scenario is simple enough.

Another way to put it is to say that a tonne of carbon dioxide will result in three square meter of ice undergoing meltdown. To reverse the trend, we would have to bring the temperatures down from what they are today to what they were in pre-industrial times.

The findings of this study got published in the journal Nature Climate Change.
