Toys R Us liquidation sales begin today, March 22.

Amy von Walter, EVP, Global Communications, Philanthropy and Customer Care at ToysRUs has confirmed to the Washington Post that the ToysRUs store closing sales begin today.

Update 10 am ET: Seems the communication from ToysRUs HQ to TRU stores is already broken down. The first people report from ToysRUs store visits and there is no closing sale. Store employees do not know when the closing sales begin. Some TRU stores put up signs outside saying: "Liquidation Sale Will Not Start Today as Originally Scheduled."

As reported on Wednesday, ToysRUs plans to begin the store closing sales today. The going-out-of-business sale is expected to last into June. There are over 735 ToysRUs stores remaining. At around 150 stores, the closing sales have already begun last month.

von Walter states that the liquidation sales will be taking place at all ToysRUs and BabiesRUs store locations. This is despite the Canadian ToysRUs deal that is still in negotiations. Toymaker MGA Entertainment is leading an initiative to buy the Canadian ToysRUs unit and up to 400 US ToysRUs locations. If they deal is not happing fast, these stores will be empty shells.

According to the Post, the online store of ToysRUs will not start a liquidation sale just yet. You need to keep in mind that all sales will be final when you shop for deals on toys today. Toys R Us and Babies R Us will continue to accept gift cards and e-gift cards for another 30 days. ToysRUs coupons will not be accepted anymore. BabiesRUs registry users with "endless earnings" and other rewards must redeem them by mid-April.

There are no details yet on the discounts you can expect in the ToysRUs Stores Closing Sales today. If you have time to spare this morning, just head to your local ToysRUs store and see what the deals are like. For deal hunters, the ToysRUs store closing sale is a long-term project.

The toy retailer will very likely begin with modest discounts to leverage the publicity about the kick-off of the store closing sale. The advantage of shopping the store closing sales early is the selection. Toy makers are not happy with the wind-down process and will not supply any new inventory. What is gone will be gone for good.

The ToysRUs store closing deals will be up to 30% initially depending on the product category. Popular toy brands like Lego will be on sale with much lower discounts. In the UK, deal hunters can only save 15% on construction toys including Lego.

The ToysRUs liquidation sale is going to be a hot opportunity to save on toys, but it's not a Black Friday, at least initially. The discounts grow bigger in the course of the liquidation sale. The biggest savings will be available just before closing, but obviously, the selection of quality and popular toys will be small.

To find ToysRUs store locations, use the online store search. We also expect that the closing sale will be also in some form be available online at toysrus.com. To find a local BabyRUs store use the BabyRUs online store search on the babiesrus site.
