Samsung In-Display Fingerprint Scanner Patent Surfaces

In-Display Fingerprint Scanning in the works at Samsung.

While Samsung still works on In-Display fingerprint scanner patents, Chinese smartphone brand Vivo already sells a smartphone with an in-display fingerprint sensor. Samsung filed a patent at the European patent office titled "Apparatus and method for receiving fingerprint information through guide."

The patent is about guiding the user to place the finger on top of the integrated sensor through graphic indicators. The sensor might be smaller than the finger and partial scans need to be put together. The patent is not about the sensor technology itself, which Samsung is likely sourcing anyway from Synaptics, which makes the in-display fingerprint scanner found in the Vivo X20 Plus UD.

The Vivo X20 Plus UD also displays a graphic under the finger to give the user feedback that the finger is in the right spot to unlock the phone. In hands-on videos, this appears to work perfectly and naturally.

When Samsung and Apple will be ready with under display fingerprint scanning is unclear. The Samsung Galaxy X is supposed to feature a foldable screen. An in-display fingerprint scanner would be a good fit for a foldable smartphone. A recent report out of South Korea claims that the Galaxy Note 9 due later this year, would feature already an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Tech companies try to file as many patents as possible just in case that they are faced with a patent dispute. The new patent was spotted by Dutch LetsGoDigital. You can find the patent filing in the WIPO database here.
