Huawei Patents Foldable Phone

Chinese tech company will release a foldable phone eventually.

Huawei already confirmed to work on a foldable phone in fall of last year. A Huawei executive said in October that they have a working prototype. The Huawei foldable phone could already be released this year. The Samsung Galaxy X foldable phone is set for a 2019 release. A new patent surfaced that describes Huawei's technology behind their foldable smartphone.

Huawei filed a patent with WIPO titled "Mobile terminal folding mechanism and mobile terminal." The patent was published today and describes the working of a foldable mechanism for a foldable smartphone with a flexible screen.

The foldable smartphone consists of one large flexible display, that can be folded in the middle. In open state, it has a tablet size. The folding mechanism comprises a soft supporting structure and a hard supporting structure embedded in the soft supporting structure. The foldable mechanism can be folded frequently without problems and small gaps or holes in the design are prevented.

It could be Huawei that will be first to release a real foldable smartphone. By real I mean a screen that unfolds with no gap in the middle like the released ZTE Axon M has.

The Huawei patent was discovered by Dutch LetsoGoDigital and is available here. Earlier this week, Huawei released the P20 and the P20 Pro smartphones.
