Huawei Plans to Beat Samsung to Market with World's First Foldable Smartphone

Chinese smartphone giant wants to be first with foldable phone.

Huawei is according to industry sources busy working on a foldable smartphone to be released in November of this year. The goal is to bring the world's first foldable smartphone to the market. A recently surfaced Huawei patent for a foldable smartphone supports the report on Korean ETNews.

Samsung said a year ago to release a foldable smartphone in 2019. The tech giant could of course change its plans in the face of Huawei's competition. As smartphones have very much matured as a device, the prospect for smartphone makers to introduce a completely new design is fueling development of foldable phones.

Huawei and Samsung are not alone. LG also works on foldable phone designs and so is reportedly Apple. Rumors from last year even say that LG and Apple work together on the foldable display technology. Other smartphone brands including Lenovo and Oppo are reportedly also working on foldable phones.

The technicaly difficulty to make a true foldable phone is the supported curvature of the display. LG Display has shown in a roadmap published in Fall of last year that they will have a pOLED display with 1.0R curvature ready in 2019. 1.0R curvature would allow you to fold the display like a piece of paper.

The first foldable smartphones will have very likely a larger curvature and will not completly fold flat. By the way, the ZTE Axon M is not a true foldable smartphone, it has two screen.
