Huawei Patents 3D Display Technology for Smartphones

New patent details 3D display for smartphones.

Huawei is not only working on a foldable smartphone. The Chinese tech giant also has set its eyes on 3D displays for smartphones. A new patent titled "3D display method and user terminal" filed at the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) appeared detailing Huawei's approach to a 3D display without glasses and the need of a special display.

The technology is based on the concept of using the camera to determine the angle a user looks at the screen to display the fitting 3D imagery. The Chinese manufacturer describes an advancement so that the user does not have to look at the screen from a fixed distance or angle.

In addition, an auxiliary camera can be used. These cameras determine the distance between the eyes and the distance to the mobile device. As soon as the viewing angle of the user changes, the 3D projection angle will also change. This dynamic form of projection provides much more realistic effects, as Huawei describes in the patent, unearthed by Dutch LetsGoDigital.

Smartphone makers are scrambling to find the next big thing in phones. A 3D display functionality is certainly an interesting feature. Just think of the little Pokemon to pop out of the screen when you try to catch them in Pokemon Go.

Most phones with a 3D display available today have an autostereoscopic parallax barrier on the screen. 3D phones from Sharp, LG, Zopo and others are mostly available in Japan, South Korea, and China.
