Microsoft Azure Sphere Protects Kids Against Cyber Attacks Through Connected Toys

The future of toys is in connected devices with cloud access, but that has high-security risks.

Microsoft is trying to save our kids and us from cyber attacks through connected toys and devices with a new big security initiative around Azure Sphere.

The Redmond based Tech giant is harnessing the power of the intelligent cloud to address emerging threats against a new class of connected devices, those relying on a chip the size of a thumbnail called a microcontroller unit (MCU).

MCU-powered devices are already the most populous area of computing with roughly 9 billion new devices every year. They are found in everything from toys and household appliances to industrial equipment. Cyber attackers are starting to target them as we have seen in last year in large-scale attacks on routers and cheap surveillance cameras.

To bring security to this next generation of connected devices, Microsoft is introducing Azure Sphere, the industry's first holistic platform for creating highly secured, connected MCU devices on the intelligent edge. Featuring an entirely new class of MCUs with more than five times the power of legacy MCUs, an OS custom built for IoT security, and a turnkey cloud security service that guards every Azure Sphere device. With Azure Sphere, Microsoft extends the boundaries of the intelligent edge, to power and secure an entirely new category of devices.

"Microsoft's approach with Azure Sphere is unique in that it addresses security holistically at every layer."

Microsoft has partnered with chip maker MediaTek to develop the first System-on-Chip (SOC) as part of Microsoft's new Azure Sphere solution. The MediaTek MT3620 Wi-Fi connected controller is built around a processor designed to run Azure Sphere's IoT operating system. It also includes built-in support for Microsoft's latest security protocols. These chipsets will be sold as part of the Azure Sphere solution and sampling chips with lead customers has begun. The MT3620 will have broad product availability by Q3 of 2018.

The first connected toys based on the MT3620 Azure Sphere solution could be in stores already for the Holidays 2018. Along Azure Sphere, Microsoft is making enhancement in the Microsoft 365 cloud to detect and manage security threats.
