Facebook is reportedly building a team to design its own microprocessors for smart speakers and more things

Facebook is in the early phases of designing its own silicon chips which will run its gadgets and servers. A manager brought in by the company helped in the assembly of an end to end SoC/ASIC, firmware, and driver development organization, according to Bloomberg.

The whole scheme is gathering speed. Yet Facebook’s plan to rely on its own resources is something that is not unique. It happens to be the last giant firm to go down that path. Others have preceded it in this game. Facebook wants to let go of its dependence on outsiders such as Qualcomm.

Apple has its own branded chips in its iOS gadgets. Even the Intel processors in its Mac computers will be replaced soon. Google too has custom-made AI chips. It has even larger plans than Apple.

Amazon is making chips for its Alexa AI devices. Facebook is offering jobs to talented individuals who can deal with its infrastructure needs. The company’s AI servers will be where the focus will remain.

Currently, these AI servers are Nvidia-based. Mark Zuckerberg has claimed that AI will play a dominant role in the company’s profits for the future. The chips that will be manufactured by a group hired by Facebook will be used in its smart speakers or the yet-to-be Oculus VR headset.
