Oculus Go App Development Kicked Off

Facebook helps developers to make Oculus Go apps.

The new Oculus Go stand-alone virtual reality headset could become the new standard device for virtual reality consumption in 2018. The key to mass adoption is the ease-of-use and below $200 price-point. Facebook announced the $199 Oculus Go last month with a release date somewhere in early 2018. End of last week, Facebook has started to guide developers on how to adapt and optimize their apps for Oculus Go.

This a positive sign that the release of Oculus Go is not that far off anymore. We assume that Facebook gives developers about a month to work on their apps to make them work on the stand-alone Oculus VR headset.

The Oculus Go is compatible with the same Mobile SDK, Unity, and Unreal SDKs that power Oculus applications on Samsung Gear VR, and most Gear VR apps will run unmodified on Oculus Go. This means that developers will have not much work to make their apps work great on the Oculus Go.

Unlike the Samsung Galaxy devices that run Gear VR, Oculus Go does not ship with Google Play Services installed. This could be the biggest issue for some apps that rely on Google Play Services such as Google Firebase, and Google Cloud Messaging, etc.

Also, the Oculus Go does not have a camera. Any camera-based app will not work. Developers can find the full guide on how to make their app work on Oculus Go here.

Because of the very likely high demand, the Oculus Go is prone to sell out at launch.

The Oculus Go is listed on Amazon.com for a while. Get our free online inventory tracking app The Tracker to get notified on your smartphone when the Amazon is starting to sell the Oculus Go.

Designed with breathable fabrics, Oculus Go is comfortable and fully adjustable. It can also be used with glasses. The 3D visuals are combined with spatial audio for complete immersion. The Oculus Go runs on a Snapdragon 821 processor and features a 2,560x1,440px resolution. The audio output is integrated into the headset.

The more expensive Lenovo Mirage Solo stand-alone headset is available for pre-order now and will ship on May 5. The $399 Lenovo Mirage has a more advanced tracking than the Oculus Go that allows you to lean, dodge or duck. Amazon is offering a bundle deal on the Lenovo Mirage Solo and Camera that saves $50.
