  • Despite Foles’ impressive postseason performance and solidification of one of the league’s best backup quarterbacks, Wentz firmly remains the starting quarterback of the Eagles and the face of their franchise. Is he healthy enough to play?

Philadelphia Eagles’ franchise quarterback Carson Wentz is coming off an extremely impressive sophomore season, leading all quarterbacks in total QBR by an impressive margin. Despite only playing thirteen games, Wentz threw 33 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. Certainly, the Eagles have no regrets about trading up to the number two draft spot in the 2016 draft to select Wentz who has undoubtedly strong talent and drive.

Went is also a very physical, effort-forward player, which can lead to injury. Unfortunately, during week 14 against the Los Angeles Rams, Wentz suffered a left knee injury, with an MRI the next day revealing a torn ACL. With his season over, the Eagles turned to backup quarterback Nick Foles, who helped the team secure their first Super Bowl victory in franchise history, defeating the New England Patriots 41–33 in Super Bowl LII.

Despite Foles’ impressive postseason performance and solidification of one of the league’s best backup quarterbacks, Wentz firmly remains the starting quarterback of the Eagles and the face of their franchise. Assuming he’s healthy, Wentz will start week one, when the Eagles kick off the 2018 NFL season in Philadelphia with a Thursday night matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. Still, whether Wentz is starting on opening night is contingent on his health.

Injury Prognosis

An ACL tear in the knee typically occurs when the side of the knee is hit very hard, as Wentz knows. A complete ACL rupture requires about six months of post-operative recovery as well as required rebuilding for the ligament.

For any knee surgery, physical therapy is a long road. Considering that the injury took place on December 10, 2017, there is optimism that Wentz is ready for the season's beginning in September 2018.

Progression, Though No Timetable

Wentz told reporters his training is underway and he is encouraged by the early progress while emphasizing he will not rush the rehab process. He did not go into specifics regarding his timetable, though he did note he doesn’t feel the need to play in the preseason to be the week one starter.

Nick Foles' reliability as a backup will certainly encourage the franchise not to rush Wentz as well, knowing that their potent roster is more than capable of pulling off wins with Foles under the center. Nonetheless, there is no doubt that the Eagles' best chance to win games is with Wentz as their quarterback.

No Change in Skill

Upon returning, Wentz is adamant that the injury will not impact his game, which earned him frontrunner status for league MVP before his week 14 injury. Also, despite losing offensive coordinator Frank Reich and quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo to the Colts and Vikings, respectively, Wentz noted that new offensive coordinator Al Groh had a big hand in elevating the Eagles’ offense last year and is an excellent coach.

Coming Back Soon

There is no official timetable yet for Wentz’s return, though Eagles fans can feel certain that Wentz will be under center again soon, if not for week one, barring any setbacks. With Wentz recovering and the team mostly intact, the Eagles are poised to make another Super Bowl run.
