A couple years back, few could have predicted the enormous bang that smartphones made on the market. Once a novelty designed for tech-oriented people, they have come to dominate most aspects of our lives, from the way we navigate our cities to the way we socialize. Yet they could never do all that without one of the most powerful tools of our times: mobile apps.

Mobile Apps Usage on the Rise in Singapore – Security a Top Priority

Applications especially developed for smartphones are on the rise everywhere, and Singapore could be no exception to the rule. In fact, in Q1 of 2017 alone, the usage of mobiles apps in Singapore demonstrated a growth of 10% compared to Q1 2016, as users spent an average of 192 minutes on their smartphone apps. Around the globe the trend is going up, too, as growth between Q1 2016 and Q1 2017 was roughly 25% to reach a total of 1.7 billion hours. According to the same research, out of the 99 downloaded apps, an average 40 are used monthly in Singapore, with an average of 12 apps being used daily – only a bit higher than 11, which is the global average.

The survey shows that the most used apps globally are those that fall into the Utility and Tools category – largely due to the fact that they are already installed in smartphones. Social Networking and Communication apps follow closely, constituting the largest category with regard to average usage. With the development of more secure ways to connect, users are turning to newer types of apps that handle sensitive data like financial information. Web banking apps are very popular and mobile apps that use secure 256-bit SSL encryption can be used for mobile trade in Singapore to allow for encrypted transactions that do not put the users at risk of having their personal information or funds stolen.

Updated SingPass Set to Roll Out Soon

Security for transactions is also at the heart of a new SingPass mobile app that has been developed by the Government of Singapore to enhance safety in the public’s transactions with the state. According to Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, the Singaporean Minister-in-charge for the strategy dubbed Smart Nation Initiative, the Government is looking to launch a SingPass mobile app very soon, as they are now in the stage of carrying out internal trials. The end result will be a mobile app that will allow users to safely enter into transactions with government agencies, without any need for two-factor authentication by means of physical tokens, as has been the case so far. It will also allow Singaporeans to use digital services while eliminating time-consuming verification methods like typing in elaborate passwords and will also enable them to use services on the go or from abroad.

The SingPass mobile app will rely on a simple six-digit password or highly secure and unique biometric data like a facial scan or a user’s fingerprint. It is part of the National Digital Identity policy that will be fully operational by 2020, according to estimations by the Government. The mobile app itself is currently set to be released later in 2018, sometime during the second half of the year. The NDI initiative will also include strategic partnerships with the private sector and gradually developing other tools like digital signatures.

While SingPass has been in use for a while now, a new version of a mobile app that will play into the Singaporeans’ familiarity and love for mobile apps will surely help boost not only security but also convenience in dealings with public authorities.
