Nintendo Switch Sales Number almost Hits 18 Million Units

The Nintendo Switch pushes Nintendo to extreme heights.

The Nintendo Switch is much more successful than Nintendo expected. The Japanese video game maker announced today in the earnings release for the fiscal year ending March 31, that the Nintendo Switch sales reached 17.79 million units since the release on March 3, 2017.

The success of the Switch drives up profits in an incredible jump. Nintendo generated 178 billion yen ($1.62 billion) in operating profit for the year. This is a staggering 500% increase over the previous year. The revenue increased 116 percent to 1.06 trillion yen ($9.66 billion).

Nintendo is forecasting higher profits for the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2019. The Mario company expects to sell 20 million Nintendo Switch consoles in the coming 12 months. This would mean that on March 31, 2019, the Nintendo Switch unit sales would reach about 38 million.

Besides the very positive numbers, Nintendo also announced a new President. Current President and CEO Tatsumi Kimishima will step down. 68-year-old Kimishima took over in 2015 after the death of legendary Satoru Iwata. The new Nintendo President will be 46-year-old Shuntaro Furukawa. Furukawa served already on the board of Nintendo. Mr. Furukawa, who joined Nintendo in 1994, will take the reigns of Nintendo on June 28.

Its not all good news with the Nintendo Switch for Nintendo. This week a vulnerability in the NVIDIA Tegra CPU of the Switch was revealed that opens the door to homebrew apps, emulator and Linux on the Switch. Nintendo is expected to start shipping a revised Nintendo Switch that will have these security bugs fixed. If you love homebrew, you need to get a Nintendo Switch console now before its too late.
