Tesla Autopilot Head Jim Keller Resigns After Two Years

Chip Guru Jim Keller of Tesla Motors Resigns After Two Years of Service as Autopilot VP

Tesla’s Autopilot Chief, Jim Keller, has left the company after two years. This is just one in a series of job resignations by executives at the company under the watchful eye of Elon Musk.

Keller joined the trade two years ago and was proficient in microchip manufacturing. According to Bloomberg, he will return to semiconductor engineering which was his real field of interest.

Tesla confirmed the news of Keller's departure. A Tesla spokesperson said in a statement:

“Today is Jim Keller’s last day at Tesla, where he has overseen low-voltage hardware, Autopilot software and infotainment. Prior to joining Tesla, Jim’s core passion was microprocessor engineering and he’s now joining a company where he’ll be able to once again focus on this exclusively. We appreciate his contributions to Tesla and wish him the best.”

The group at Tesla managing the Autopilot project has had a high turnover rate. A crash took place of Tesla’s Model X in March of this year. The driver died in the accident. Since then, Tesla has doubled the pressure on its Autopilot team to correct the flaws in the system.

Driver assist technology still has a long way to go. The authorities are looking into why the crash took place. Tesla’s projects have come under criticism and investigation by regulatory bodies.

The road to self-driving vehicles is a long one. There are many hurdles along the way. Pete Bannon will pick up the project from where Jim Keller left it. Let’s hope his efforts bear fruit and Tesla’s Autopilot project benefits from his sharpshooting skills and plentiful talent.
