Annual Amazon Prime Membership Cost Rises to $119

Amazon hikes Prime service cost by 20%.

The access to the Amazon Prime Day 2018 deals will be more expensive. Amazon will increase the cost of the Prime membership by 20% to $119.99 per year. The increase comes despite record-breaking sales.

Sales in Amazon's last quarter rose by 43% compared to a year ago and profits jumped from $724m to $1.6billion. So why is Amazon increasing the Prime membership cost?

Starting May 11, new Prime member subscribers will pay $119 per year for the service. The new $20 more expensive annual fee will apply to current Prime members starting with renewals on June 16. Amazon has not raised the Prime service fee in 2014 from $79 a year to $99.

Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky argues that the cost of running Prime membership services has increased because Prime members can get free shipping on more than 100 million products. Additionally Prime Now is available in more areas around the United States. "The value of Prime to customers has never been greater," Olsavsky said in the earnings call on Thursday.

Jeff Bezos recently unveiled that Amazon has more than 100 million Prime members around the globe. I don't believe that many will leave the service because of the $20 more per year. Prime membership is just too bloody convenient and then there is the Grand Tour on Amazon Prime Video.

If you intend to cancel, you should at least wait until Prime Day 2018 is over. We anticipated that the huge Amazon sales day will begin this year on July 9. If you still want to cancel your Prime membership, the button is available on this page.
