ANTVR's MIX AR Glasses Makes Microsoft's HoloLens look Very Bad

The ANTVR MIX AR Glass has a 96-degree field of view, HoloLens has 35 degrees.

AntVR MIX augmented reality headset is the smallest headset in the world with an immersive 96° field-of-view (FoV). The huge field of view angle is what makes these augmented reality glasses stand out. The Microsoft HoloLens only has 35 degrees, making it totally not immersive. Magic Leap has so far not revealed how big the FOV on their AR glasses is.

With an innovative optical system that combines the outside environment and enlarged display light through two separate optical channels to present AR vision with a larger FoV.

MIX’s extensive FoV gives users a remarkably fluid and natural stereoscopic experience directly through the glasses, meaning users are no longer required to hold up additional devices to their face to see AR content. In this regard, the headset offers a 1200 x 1200 display in each eye with a 90Hz refresh rate.

The built-in inside-out head tracking offers six degrees of freedom. These innovative applications add to MIX’s advanced capabilities that allow users to have a completely immersive AR experience. The headset also supports positional tracking to help deliver a complete AR experience that is all around the user. Virtual objects, like holograms, will remain in place in the real environment rather than moving with the user, even when not in the users’ vision.

The MIX AR Glasses monocular FoV is around 82.9 degrees horizontally and 48.6 degrees vertically (equivalent to 96.1 degrees diagonally). This impressive FoV, which is much wider than the majority of other AR devices available on the market, is the result of AntVR’s Dual-Channel Mixed Optics

The glasses built-in features allow it to connect to PC’s and is designed to be compatible with SteamVR. Existing games on SteamVR that have a dark background can be used on MIX out of the box, however instead of a dark area, through the headset users will see the real environment.

The glasses also features two USB ports to connect extension modules to increase the breadth of diverse interaction users can have in AR. The add-on features include eye tracking, hand tracking and controllers.

The ANTVR MIX AR glasses launched on Kickstarter today for $539 with out-side in tracking module. The release is planned for December. ANTVR has several years experience in making mobile VR headsets for other brands. The company has manufactured over a million units, giving these new AR glasses some credibility. Backing a Kickstarter is always a risk. It's only for early adopters with disposable cash.
