#MeToo Founder Tarana Burke Speaks at German Startup Fest Bits & Pretzels

Bits & Pretzels sets sign against Kevin Spacey.

Kevin Spacey was the star keynote speaker of Bits & Pretzels in 2016. He also appeared at the 5,000 attendees strong startup event last year, just before the scandal around the actor broke loose. The organizers of Bits & Pretzels distanced themselves from Spacey last year and set a sign in the Bits & Pretzels 2018 event with the announcement of Tarana Burke, the founder of the #MeToo Movement as a keynote speaker.

Tarana Burke is among those recognized as Time’s Person of the Year 2017: The Silence Breakers. Time recognized the women and men who have publicly spoken out about and taken action against sexual harassment and assault.

A lifelong social justice activist, Burke is the founder of the Me Too Movement, having first used the phrase as part of her work building solidarity among survivors years before it became a viral hashtag. A powerful rallying cry that has swept the world—generating over 13 million Facebook posts and Tweets.

#metoo is not just an overnight hashtag sensation; Tarana has dedicated more than 25 years of her life to social justice and to laying the groundwork for a movement that was initially created to help young women of color who survived sexual abuse and assault. The movement now inspires solidarity, amplifies the voices thousands of victims of sexual abuse, and puts the focus back on survivors.

On stage, she provides words of empowerment that lift up marginalized voices, enables survivors across all races, genders, or classes to know that they are not alone, and creates a place for comfort and healing to those who have experienced trauma. Tarana Burke is also senior director of programs at Brooklyn-based Girls for Gender Equity.

Gender equity is also one part of this year’s Bits & Pretzels – because it will be all about Diversity! We believe that Diversity can help us to unlock the biggest upcoming entrepreneurial potential of our time. Diversity in our workforce, in new markets, in our products, in our endeavors, in our community - in our thinking in general - will be the key for new and bigger opportunities ahead. We are all talking about this a lot, but it’s time to put this theme to the core of our doing!

Bits & Pretzels 2018 will take place in Munich on September 30 - October 2, 2018. Bits & Pretzels is now an annual 3-day founders festival loaded with keynote speakers, discussions, and an epic finale at the Oktoberfest on the last day of the event.

This year attendees of Bits & Pretzels need to apply. The tickets are limited to 5,000. You can apply here.
