Using Lasers in Space NASA will Create Conditions that Facilitate the Coldest Temperature in the Known Universe to study quantum physics

The only word that befits such a scheme is “awesome”. NASA plans on creating temperatures that are the coldest in the entire universe. In fact, they are to be ten billion times colder than the dry and arid vacuum environment of outer space.

The Cold Atom Lab (CAL) has the dimensions of an ice hamper and is aboard a rocket. This gadget will help scientists calculate the temperature of very cold atoms. Using lasers and magnets a mass of atoms will be cooled to the point where they are just a fraction beyond absolute zero.

As everyone knows, absolute zero is the coldest you can get in our universe. At this temperature, the movement of the atoms actually comes to a halt.

Thanks to CAL, atoms can be cooled to a degree above absolute zero. The clouds formed will be termed Bose-Einstein condensates. While they can be created on earth, the issue is our gravitational force which only allows them to appear for a very short period of time before disappearing.

On board the ISS, gravity does not prevail so such conditions can be created that would facilitate the coldest temperature in the universe, according to ScienceAlert.

Bose-Einstein condensates are a form of superfluid. Such experiments will help in the field of superconductors. Especially quantum computers and laser-cooled atomic clocks will become the order of the day thanks to the spin-offs of this experiment.

Even the dark energy which still remains for all purposes a mystery will be elucidated via this research by NASA. The coldest temperature in the universe will be groundbreaking work that opens the way to a bright and beautiful future.

Studying these super-cold atoms is something that only an agency of the magnitude of NASA can accomplish. To go where others have not gone before to create the coldest temperature in the entire universe is not a heroic deed.
