Virtual Reality App VR Swann Helps Alzeimer's Patients to Train their Memory

New VR solution to help Alzeimer's Patients improve spatial memory to train for daily life.

There are already VR solutions that help overcome phobias. A new virtual reality solution could become a practical part of Alzheimer's therapy. Swann VR is the world’s first virtual reality memory training tool for Alzheimer’s disease.

Swann VR uses the affordable Oculus Rift technology to simulate a virtual version of the real-world environment of an Alzheimer's patient. Following a map, the patients need to find the things they need to use in their daily routine. Finding the items gives them points. This way they can measure the progress in the training of their memory.

Currently, therapists and primary caregivers can select between five realistic environments. They are encouraged to select environments that best mirror what their patients experience on a daily basis. Swann VR software also features specialized physics thus ensuring accessibility for patients in wheelchairs and other height-modifying assistive devices.

Swann VR is the creation of Northwestern University student Taegh Sokhey, who will begin medical school in the fall of 2018. Mr. Sokhey will be speaking about his technology at 8 a.m. on May 26, 2018, at the Health Tech Summit 2018 in Chicago. Interested parties can RSVP on eventbrite.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), also referred to simply as Alzheimer's, is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that usually starts slowly and worsens over time. It is the cause of 60–70% of cases of dementia. The most common early symptom is difficulty in remembering recent events (short-term memory loss).
