Spin Master relaunched their STEAM Toy Brand Erector by Meccano in US Market

Oldest STEAM Engineering Toys now available in US under ‘Erector by Meccano’ Brand

Spin Master, the Canadian toy company has relaunched the oldest construction toys in the USA; their products will be available under the brand name Erector by Meccano. The launch event took place at this year’s Maker Faire in San Mateo; the company also officially sponsored the event.

During the event families were invited to take part in “make and take” contest, to assemble different parts of their toys, the participants were guided by Erector designers, a single set of Elector kit can be used to build multiple toys; participants had to use their own imagination and creativity to create unique models by assembling the different parts.

"More than 100 years later, the original values and objective of Erector remain the same," said Fraser Paterson, Vice President, Construction. "We hope our sets inspire future innovators to think big and find solutions that help turn those ideas into realities. Through our presence at Maker Faire, we will be giving them real-time tools to do just that."

Meccano was originally founded by Frank Hornby in 1898, the model construction system had different reusable parts like wheels, gears, axle, metal strips, nuts, bolts, screws, etc. The kits came with instruction manuals about how the different parts can be assembled into different models of mechanical devices that worked like the original machines.

Later, in 1913, Erector launched its own sets of model construction toys in the USA, and they were an instant hit among kids of all ages.

In 2000, Meccano acquired the Meccano Company and started selling all their products on a global scale. However, in 2013 Meccano was bought by Canadian children entertainment giant Spin Master, who kept on selling the STEAM construction sets under the name of the original company.

For the last century, engineers and designers have been making complex models using these construction kits, one of the biggest projects on record weighted around 1300 kilograms and used 100,000 different parts; it took around 1100 hours to assemble them.

According to Meccano, the company will continue introducing new materials and technology into their construction sets; they want to provide a perfect STEAM platform for kids, where they can use their imagination and creativity and learn a basic level of engineering while having fun.
