The large and small, beautiful and bizarre are among the newly discovered animals, plants and microbes announced by the College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) as the Top 10 New Species for 2018.

The List of Top Ten Novel Species of this Year include Some Fascinating Life Forms

This year has been an exciting one so far. One of the highlights of 2018 has been some new species, both extant and extinct, that have been discovered by science. These include among their ranks a very tall tree and the fossils of a lion that happened to be a marsupial. Let us delve into the top ten species for this year. Surely, they will surprise your senses and stimulate your curiosity as human beings who take an interest in their surroundings:

1. Protist - An Enigmatic Single Cellular Creature

Scientific Name: Ancoracysta twista

Location: An aquarium in San Diego

It is totally different from the expectations of biologists. Known by the name of A. twista, it is microscopic and consists of a single cell. This living being exists in the vicinity of brain coral. It has a flagellum and engulfs other protists for its nutritional needs. It is indeed an oddball in the world of creatures to be found within a single drop of water.

2. Atlantic forest tree - A Giant Tree that Stands Out from the Rest

Scientific Name: Dinizia jueirana-facao

Location: Brazil

Situated in Brazil, this species of trees known as D. jueirana-facao has a sister tree that was discovered a century ago. The rainforest of Brazil contains this tall tree that is often found in segregated spots. The region where it has been found used to be teeming with flora and fauna, yet due to human habitation, it is now a fraction of its former self.

3. Amphipod - A Crustacean that Resembles Quasimodo

Scientific Name: Ancoracysta twista

Location: Unknown

Over 26 species of shrimps were spotted by scientists in 2017. They were located off the coast of Antarctica. They had all sorts of hues and were quite a variegated lot. E.quasimodo among them had a humped back like The Hunchback of Notre Dame. It is two inches in length.

4. Baffling Beetle - A Beetle that Travels by Hitching Rides

Scientific Name: Nymphister kronaueri

Location: Costa Rica

In Costa Rica, the N. kronaueri is a little beetle that hides its true nature to great advantage. It also has a migratory nature. The travel it undergoes takes place by its habit of clamping onto an ant and camouflaging its true colors.

5. Tapanuli Orangutan - A Very Special Orangutan

Scientific Name: Pongo tapanuliensis

Location: Sumatra, Indonesia

This endangered great ape from Indonesia has a variant that happens to be the eighth type and it has been located by scientists. It was driven to almost complete extinction, yet now slowly it is recovering from being nearly wiped out. Termed the Tapanuli Orangutan, the community of these great apes has been replenished so that now there are over 800 members in it.

6. Swire's Snailfish - A Fish of Deep Waters

Scientific Name: Pseudoliparis swirei

Location: Western Pacific Ocean

The Mariana Trench happens to be the deepest oceanic region on the whole planet. A unique form of snailfish was found there which is termed the P. swirei which is actually the deepest fish in the sea. It exists in an area where there is pitch darkness. Such conditions are common at the bottom of the ocean floor.

7. Heterotrophic Flower - A Flower that Feeds on Fungi

Scientific Name: Sciaphila sugimotoi

Location: Ishigaki Island, Japan

Termed the S. sugimotoi, this flower is located on Ishigaki Island in Japan. It was an elusive species that had not been seen by researchers until now. Unlike most plants, it lives off a fungus to which it attaches itself.

8. Volcanic Bacterium - Strange Protobacteria from the Canary Islands

Scientific Name: Thiolava veneris

Location: Canary Islands

The Canary Islands were subject to a volcanic eruption about seven years ago. After that, a species of bacteria known as Venus’s Hair were found growing below the surface of the ocean surrounding the islands.

9. Marsupial Lion - An Extinct Lion that is Like Kangaroos and Koalas

Scientific Name: Wakaleo schouteni

Location: Australia

In Australia, a lion that was small in size roamed the forests about 23 million years ago. While it is no longer alive, the discovery of its fossils has been an exciting find for paleontologists.

10. Cave Beetle - Another Beetle that Lives in Grottos

Scientific Name: Xuedytes bellus

Location: China

In the limestone caves of China, exists a beetle that had made them its permanent habitat. It has a slender frame and its limbs are like those of an arachnid.

So these were the top ten new species of 2018. Countless more life forms will be discovered in the upcoming years since Mother Nature is the best artist. It never repeats its design and continues churning out novel living beings in all its growth and grandeur.
