Rymek Retro Mechanical Keyboard Is for the Modern Hemingway: Review

The Rymek mechanical Bluetooth keyboard by KnewKey is designed with inspiration from typewriters in the 50s.

The Rymek mechanical Bluetooth keyboard is great for modern day Hemingways or Bukowskis, if the latter is more your literature role model. Both legendary writers used a mechanical typewriter to bring their creativity to paper. Today, most people write on a bland PC or Mac keyboard. KnewKey designed an emotional alternative with the Rymek.

Rymek is designed with inspiration from typewriters in the 50s, giving you that clicking sensation under your fingers as you type. Also integrated is a LED backlight, which is more like a light show that just a backlight.

This retro Bluetooth keyboard is rather heavy (1.3kg), which is great for the stability, but makes it a drag to carry around. To get started, the Rymek keyboard needs to be charged. The 2,000mAh battery gives you a 1-week battery life with backlight off. Next step is to pair the Rymek keyboard via Bluetooth.

This is not that intuitive as the keyboard supports to manage three different Bluetooth connections. To pair the Rymek you need to press the Fn + F1 key to configure the first Bluetooth device connection. The LED indicator starts flashing, now you need to press the Fn + ยท key (below esc key). The Rymek show up in the Bluetooth device list on the iPad or whatever you pair it with as first "Keyboard" and the registers as MX520.

All Bluetooth related keys carry the Bluetooth symbol. Once you have configured all your devices you can switch between them using fn + F1, F2 or F3.

Typing on the Rymek is fun, but keep in mind that's making a typing noise. Writing with the Rymek at a Starbucks might annoy your table neighbors. Typing on the Rymek keyboard is as load as an old PC keyboard.

Overall the design and the build quality is great on KnewKey's Rymek. As you can see in the photo gallery, this retro keyboard, and the iPad make a nice assemble either in portrait or landscape model.

The Rymek keyboard is on sale for $99 (50% off) on IndieGoGo. The expected shipping date of the Rymek is already in August. For $99, you can't go wrong with this cool retro Bluetooth keyboard. It's fun, it's stylish and it works great. Your future as digital Hemingway is going to be bright.
