Yahoo Messenger Is About To Die

The messenger is to be killed on 17th of July, 2018 and it is indeed a sad news for people with their emotional and personal affiliations attached to the messenger service.

After the death of AOL Instant Messenger on Dec 15, last year, it seems like Yahoo messenger is next in the line that is perhaps from the fraternity of one of the oldest chat services. The messenger is to be killed on 17th of July, 2018 and it is indeed a sad news for people with their emotional and personal affiliations attached to the messenger service. But everything that is exemplary has to come to an end, all hail to the evolving technology.

The Verizon owned company that currently operates Yahoo Messenger, Oath, hasn't declared any signs of replacing the messenger with another application that would somehow become a genuine competitor for other popular messaging apps such as WhatsApp, WeChat or Facebook Messenger. Yahoo Messenger launched on March 9, 1998 as Yahoo Pager, and then received its revamped rebranding on June 21, 1999.

Thus, on July 17, 2018, if it is scheduled to be taken down, it'll be exactly of twenty years and 4 months, and 8 days old. Too young to be dead? But this is how the tech industry is changing, at a very rapid pace. Oath availed this as an opportunity to tell everyone about Yahoo Squirrel, a group messaging app that is available presently in beta with an invite only feature.

You will need to request usage of the beta to be able to utilize it. Now if you go back a bit, Gmail did the same in 2004 and the strategy worked pretty well for them as currently, majority of email addresses are on Gmail. It can happen to Squirrel as well, it may die too and if it happens, you won’t have to feel surprised because that’s the how it is. While people had lots of memories attached with Yahoo messenger, it would be missed by the masses but hey, WhatsApp is a lot better and loved by everyone. Isn’t it?
