New Wireless AI Technology can monitor People Across the Wall.

X-ray vision has always intrigued people across the world, having superman like X-ray vision capabilities is indeed very fascinating and now this is no more limited to the fictitious world of sci-fi movies.

A new wireless AI-powered X-ray system developed by a team of scientists at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, CSAIL, can monitor and track the movement of people on the other side of the walls.

Although it took more than a decade, Professor Dina Katabi and her team of fellow researchers at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) have finally made a breakthrough in this field.

The new project termed “RF Pose” uses artificial intelligence (AI) to communicate with different wireless devices and track a person’s movement across the walls.

Radio signals bouncing off a person’s body are analyzed using a neural network, the movement data collected by the network is processed by a graphics engine and then visualized in a dynamic stick formation, the system is programmed in such a way that it can track basic limb movements like sit, stand, stop and move.

According to the team members, their X-ray monitoring system can be very useful in the healthcare sector, especially in monitoring people who are suffering from conditions like Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Disease.

The data collected by this new system can provide insights into the movement patterns of different patients and enable doctors to provide better medications. The system also offers security for patients and elderly people; it can track movement like fall and raise alarm in such emergency situations.

For privacy concerns, all data collected from a person is encrypted and anonymized by the system. The team is also working on a “consent mechanism” that will activate recording by the monitoring system only when a person performs a specific pattern of movements.

The team has also partnered with different doctors to explore and outline various real-life applications of their wireless X-ray monitoring system.

"We've seen that monitoring patients' walking speed and ability to do basic activities on their own gives healthcare providers a window into their lives that they didn't have before, which could be meaningful for a whole range of diseases," says Katabi, who co-wrote a new paper about the project. "A key advantage of our approach is that patients do not have to wear sensors or remember to charge their devices."

According to the team, apart from healthcare, their system can also be used by video game industry and in search and rescue operations.
