  • New research found a new record low temperature -144°F (-98°C) for anywhere on Earth on a remote East Antarctic Plateau

The Coldest Temperature on the Face of the Earth is Observed in East Antarctica which is -144°F or -98°C

The East Antarctic Plateau is the site of some of the coldest temperatures on earth. What appears to be the case though is that these temperatures are even colder than they were thought to be in previous times.

They reach -100 degrees Celsius which is very cold. This whole effort began with the obtaining of satellite data about half a decade ago. The temperature back then was -93 degrees Celsius. Two of NASA’s satellites and one of NOAA’s satellites checked up the temperatures during the winter months that lay between 2004 and 2016.

The low temperatures, it appears, are getting even lower as time passes. There were small crevasses buried in the continent of Antarctica that showed such extremely bitter cold temperatures. The lucid winter skies without any clouds and air lacking any heat-retaining humidity led to such frigid temperatures.

Cold air descends and displaces the warm air which is rare in such areas. This leads to pockets where the weather is super-chilled. Once the situation gets to facilitate this cold weather, it just begins to reach extreme temperatures where life can hardly be found.

These record cold temperatures show humanity the mirror. We know very little about our planet despite all the bragging and boasting of the scientists. The earth keeps its balance just like Mother Nature. These rereadings of the temperatures are somewhat surprising and shocking for researchers.

What they thought was a limit turned out to be spurned by Nature at the drop of a hat. The low thermometer readings were simply unimaginable in erstwhile times.

Yet today they are a reality thereby making nonsense of the scientist’s hypotheses. Survival in these cold pockets is a something which is virtually impossible. They are arid, barren and show the paucity of any life forms.

This new study got published this week in the AGU journal Geophysical Research Letters.
