New Biodegradable Plaster Patches Can Stick To Moist Surface Inside Mouth.

Smart Patches are the growth driver in wearables. Copenhagen based Dermtreat A/S and a team of researchers from the Clinical Dentistry Department, University of Sheffield's, UK, have developed a plaster-like patch that can stick inside a person’s mouth for the treatment of different oral conditions.

It was very challenging for the team because the inside part of our mouth is always moist, it is also constantly in some kind of motion due to basic activities like eating and drinking.

To overcome this hurdle the team of scientists designed special kind of flexible polymers that can easily stick to such moist surfaces. The patches can also be infused with prescription steroids and drugs for the treatment of oral conditions like lesions and ulcers.

This innovative drug patches not only treat the oral conditions at a faster pace; they also prevent pain. Since the exposure of oral infections with spicy foods and liquids can cause pain, these patches also act as a barrier and stop the infected area from coming in contact with pain causing elements.

Due to the presence of fluids all the time, any application of normal drugs inside the mouth gets diluted and results in slower treatment rates.

At present, even if a small part inside the mouth is infected, the normal treatment procedures like creams and mouthwashes are applied on the whole mouth’s surface, which requires more amounts of drugs and also increases the healing time period.

However, this is not the case with these biodegradable patches, since the inside part of the patches that contain the drugs never comes in contact with the mouth’s fluids; the amount of drug or steroid concentration does not get diluted and results in accelerated healing of the oral diseases.

"Current treatments consist of using steroids in the form of mouthwashes, creams or ointments, but these are often ineffective due to inadequate drug contact times with the lesion.” Said Jens Hansen, Chief Executive Officer at Dermtreat A/S,

"The patch acts like a plaster inside your mouth, which means it is very effective at directly targeting the specific area as well as forming a protective barrier.” Hansen further added, “Patients, who have trialed the patch found it to be very comfortable to wear, and they were really pleased with the length of adhesion, which makes it, particularly effective and efficient."

Dermtreat A/S recently received a funding of around $17.7 million from Sofinnova, a clinical stage venture capital firm based in California, USA. With some more trials, the company looks forward to obtaining a regulative approval from the concerned government regulatory agencies.
