Our Smartphones may not be Secretly Listening to Our Conversations However Some Mobile Apps are Recording Smartphone Screens

It is common knowledge among ordinary individuals today that our smartphones may actually be secretly listening to us speak with friends and family. This may sound like the sort of stuff found in conspiracy theories, yet it is not just pure paranoia.

That is because, as the saying goes, even the paranoid have enemies. Recently, no less a personality than Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO, and founder of Facebook had to testify before Congress regarding whether Facebook was eavesdropping on user’s private information or not.

While he dismissed all rumors regarding any such meddling, some researchers decided to put this hypothesis to the test.

A couple of researchers got together to test the smartphones of thousands of users to see whether their conversations were being tapped or not.

It often happens that when a person talks about a particular brand he likes or a favorite food on his smartphone, he finds an ad for that same brand and food making an appearance soon enough.

This is enough to get anyone paranoid about smartphones secretly listening to our conversations. The researchers found to their surprise that indeed some hanky panky was going on behind the scenes.

It appears to be the case that while there is no government agency behind the tapping, many apps are actually secretly viewing your smartphone screen activity. This has huge implications for the privacy and confidentiality of each and every citizen.

Over 9000 of the apps were just not very reliable, according to a report by Gizmodo. They were openly soliciting smartphone users for the sheer sake of targeted advertising.

The truth is a little bitter since, despite all the promises of the authorities, it seems we are still living in a police state. Owning smartphones that are being secretly tapped bring to mind scenarios of an Orwellian 1984-style dystopia which is indeed scary.
