Since the rainforest's discovery in 2012, Mount Lico has received worldwide attention

Forests across the globe are changing, thanks to climate-induced shifts and human activities. But recently, researchers have explored a unique rainforest in Africa that has been virtually untouched by man-made events and continues to retain its pristine state.

Discovered by a biologist Julian Bayliss in 2012, the forest sits atop Mount Lico in northern Mozambique and protected by the high walls of the volcanic mountain. The mountain rises 700 meters above the surrounding plain. Because of that, the rainforest remained hidden there for centuries.

Julian Bayliss made the discovery by using Google Earth. However, it took him around six years to actually visit and explore the place. Bayliss and his colleagues faced difficulties climbing all the way to the forest.

The forest of Mount Lico amazed researchers with its unique species. Many of those species are named after discoverer Bayliss, including Nadzikambia baylissi, a chameleon with the prehensile tail. The recent expedition was the first to explore the undisturbed forest on Mount Lico.

“Undisturbed forest is incredibly rare,” said Dr Simon Willcock. “That is why we scaled a 125-meter tall cliff with a pickaxe.”

Mozambique is known for its undisturbed forests, sitting on the top of mountains. However, none of northern Mozambique's mountains are receiving protection from government or any organization. This is a concerning trend for researchers.

“Globally, one football pitch worth of forest is lost every second, driving countless species to extinction. The removal of trees from mountain slopes also leads to soil erosion, flooding in the wet season and water shortages in the dry season.” Researchers said in a statement.

Mount Lico rainforest is the second rainforest that is discovered by Julian Bayliss. The first was found in 2005 and resides Mount Mabu, a 1700 meter high mountain range situated in the middle of a savanna.
