Researchers discovered the Oldest Colors in the World, 1.1 Billion-Year-Old Bright Pink Pigments, at a Great Depth beneath the Sahara Desert in Africa.

Scientists have discovered the oldest color in the world and it was found after much research many feet beneath the Sahara Desert in Africa. This color was originally distilled from the marine black shales in Mauritania, West Africa.

They happen to be more than half a billion years older than previous pigment discoveries. The hue is a shocking pink one. Made from chlorophyll inside very old photosynthetic beings, the hue once existed in a large body of water that is now no more.

"The bright pink pigments are the molecular fossils of chlorophyll that were produced by ancient photosynthetic organisms inhabiting an ancient ocean that has long since vanished," said Dr. Gueneli from the ANU Research School of Earth Sciences.

These fossils of color run the spectrum from crimson blood red to deep purple. When they undergo dilution with water, the color turns a bright pink. The team of researchers included members from the USA and Japan.

Basically, they reduced the rocks to powder and took out some molecules. Then the analysis process began in earnest. The stuff comprised very small cyanobacteria which were the last step in the food chain.

The oldest color which was displayed by the inner parts of these organisms shows that there were no animals way back then. Any and all large animals had not appeared on the scene due to lack of sufficient food sources so long ago.

These cyanobacteria began going extinct some 650 million years ago. After this oceanic algae made their entry in the evolutionary tale that has spanned this earth.

The fossils that were discovered used to be green in color. Then they became red and finally purple in color. The cyanobacteria used to be the predominant form of life in those times.

Photosynthesis in the past used to be based in the ocean. The oldest color which was found in the Sahara Desert thus came from tiny creatures that existed long before the first T. Rex appeared in the Jurassic Period.

This research is published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
