Prime Day 2018: First 12 Hours Troubled by Server Crashes and Dogs

First hours of Amazon Prime Day 2018 were crippled by server crashes.

The first 5 minutes of Amazon Prime Day 2018 looked still good, but then nothing worked anymore at 3:05 pm ET on Monday. For several hours the site and the Amazon Shopping app did not work. Instead, Prime members were greeted by the infamous 404 Amazon dogs. Two hours into the Amazon Prime Day issues, Amazon released a statement on Twitter that said that "some customers are having difficulty shopping."

The outcry on Twitter tells another story. We also actually gave up on covering Prime Day for several hours on Monday as we were not able to research deals on We tried accessing Amazon from different locations using proxy services, but for us, the outage was from everywhere, also from abroad.

Still, Amazon claims that they sold more items in the first hour of Prime Day 2018 than in 2017. This does not add up from what we have experienced, but we have to take Amazon's word for it. Now 12 hours, a third of Prime Day 2018, into Prime Day, the Amazon shop and the shopping app work again as we expect it from Jeff Bezos' little online bookstore. All Prime Day 2018 features are enabled again.

At the same time Prime Day burned to the ground, Jeff Bezos' net worth reached $150 Billion according to Bloomberg, making him the richest man on earth.

Let's just hope that Amazon's engineers fixed the issues for good and the site is not going up in flames again this morning when Americans try to shop the deals on the actual Prime Day 2018, Tuesday, July 17.

It all depends now on a flawless shopping experience in the remaining 24 hours of Prime Day 2018, to not make Prime Day 2018 a big fail.
